Who Is Going To Die On How To Get Away With Murder?

The school year may have just begun in season 3 of How To Get Away With Murder, but we already have a hint of what's to come. In the first two episodes, we've learned through flash-forward scenes that in two months, someone is going to die in a fire at Annalise's (Viola Davis) house.

These gruesome flash-forwards show Annalise screaming and crying as she looks at who's under a bedsheet. We don't know just whose lifeless body she's seen, but she's understandably quite distressed by the reveal. Could one of the Keating Five be lost before graduating law school?

We do know one person who's definitely safe, though. In the second episode of the season, we learned that Oliver (Conrad Ricamora) is safe. In this foreshadowing, Annalise hands him a cellphone and says to wipe it clean. The scene raises a lot of questions — but it does secure Oliver's safety from the flames.

Click through to see who we think is most likely to be on the stretcher. We've ranked them in order of who we think is most likely to die — let us know in the comments what you think.

Connor Walsh(Jack Falahee)

Connor had his shining moment in the second episode this season, when he delivered an impassioned speech against victim-blaming. His character has changed a lot since the show started — remember when he said he didn't "do boyfriends" ? — and he's a big enough character that fans would genuinely be sad if he died.

Plus, it would make sense for Annalise to be distraught over Connor's death. He's been a boon to her legal clinic, and although they don't always see eye-to-eye, he's a Keating Five member with a moral compass, and losing him would be a real loss for the group. — Meghan

Connor (Pros)

Connor has already had his time to shine as a lawyer this season, and the audience is attached enough to him that this would be a believable twist for the show. It's unclear so far whether Oliver knows who's dead, but he would be devastated at the loss of his former partner, which would also add another layer to his relationship with Annalise as his new boss.

Connor (Cons)

Between all of the crazy schemes Connor and the rest of the Keating Five have put Oliver through — including a lot of illegal requests — Oliver's been through enough. Adding Connor's death into the mix could break him, which would be pretty cruel, considering everything else he's dealt with on this show.

Bonnie Winterbottom (Liza Weil)

Bonnie stayed by Annalise's side for a long time — and she's willing to get her hands dirty. Though she's always been sort of an afterthought, on the periphery of the drama. That doesn't mean we should count her out: She's crazy enough to kill if it means saving the team.

With Frank gone, Annalise and Bonnie must now rely on each other more than in past seasons. The women have shared a lover (Annalise's now dead husband Sam) and more murder-related secrets than the girls on Pretty Little Liars.

With their bond stronger than ever, it would make sense for Annalise to be distraught over Bonnie's death. She would be losing another one of her most trusted connections. — Ally

Bonnie (Pros)

Annalise and Bonnie have had a volatile relationship in the past. They've both accused the other of being incapable of love and being a monster. They're two sides of the same coin, really.

Bonnie's death could crush Annalise — emotionally and in her day-to-day. Bonnie has been her confidant, her go-to for evil deeds, and in some ways, acts as a younger Annalise. She's playing with fire by promising to handle the Frank situation — that and her dark past could come back to haunt her.

Bonnie (Cons)

If Bonnie is dead that kills any hopes for her to one day find happiness, potentially with Asher. A murderous end to a life filled with killing is depressing to boot. And with both Bonnie and Frank out of the picture, how will Annalise continue to function?

Nate Lahey (Billy Brown)

This season, Nate and Annalise are closer than ever. Hell, Nate even trusts her enough to not be suspicious of her weird behavior — like staring off into the distance in bed with haunted eyes and a pained expression.

Nate has always been a question mark in Annalise's life: Does she really love and care for him? Or is he just a useful tool who's there when she needs him for sex, cuddling, snooping, or an alibi.

If the answer is that she loves him, then she could easily be heartbroken over his death. But if Nate is just a pawn, then it's hard to imagine Annalise caring enough to break down. —Ally

Nate (Pros)

By killing off Nate, you open Annalise to a possible relationship with Eve or someone new. You also cut off one of her few "normal" relationships, meaning that she could potentially drift deeper into a sad depression, which would be both heartbreaking and interesting to watch on-screen in future seasons.

Nate (Cons)

Come on, guys! Nate can't be the one who dies in the fire! First, he really isn't essential to the show or a fan favorite, so there's no real payoff after months of flashforwards. Second, it's highly doubtful that Annalise cares about him deeply enough to break down at the sight of his dead body (especially after the many bodies she's already seen). Third, the Keating Five doesn't care about Nate, so again, limited payoff. And lastly, Nate could easily have dispatched in some other way — maybe a surprise encounter with Frank?

Eve Rothlow (Famke Janssen)

If Annalise's reaction is any indication, it's likely that Eve could be the one who didn't survive the fire. Eve hasn't been central to the third season yet, but we know she's willing to help Annalise out when things get desperate, so it's possible she's back in town on the night of the fire.

Plus, Annalise cares deeply for Eve, even if she pretends not to, so she'd definitely be screaming and crying if she saw Eve's lifeless body in front of her. — Meghan

Eve (Pros)

Eve (Famke Janssen) hasn't been around much this season, but that doesn't mean we should rule her out. She and Annalise have a deep history, so it definitely makes sense that Annalise would be so worked up if she were to die.

Eve (Cons)

After all of the lead-up about the death, it would be a bit of a cop-out for the show to kill off a minor character. Annalise would be upset about her death — but the Keating 5 wouldn't be, since they barely knew her.

Wes Gibbins(Alfred Enoch)

Wes, who has over the course of two seasons, morphed from happy puppy to sad puppy to angry puppy, has had a rough time in law school. In addition to the murder cover-up that just seems to be a part of the law school experience, Wes has also lost his girlfriend and seen his mystery father shot in front of him. He has a lot of feelings.

He also has hands down the strangest relationship with Annalise, who seemed like maybe she wanted to sleep with him/ maybe she wanted to read him a bedtime story at any given time. — Molly

Wes (Pros)

Annalise has shown a lot of emotion for Wes over the years, and she would definitely cry if Wes died (despite the fact that he tried to shoot her himself). She knew his mother, and she knew his real name was Christophe. After his mom's brutal death, Annalise would do anything to protect Wes, and if he died in her house, there would be a lot of crying involved.

These two have a strange relationship that, if nothing else, seems to cause a lot of tears on both sides. We can see Annalise freaking out when she sees Wes's body, only to chill when she's had a moment to think.

Wes (Cons)

Can HTGAWM really kill off the character we've rooted for the most? Though it may seem like Shondaland shows are as comfortable as Game of Thrones with offing fan favorites, Grey's only really sent characters off to the great sound stage in the sky if the actor wanted to leave. Could Alfred Enoch have a big project he's running off to?

Laurel Castillo (Karla Souza)

Whether or not Laurel could be dead is definitely up for debate. On the one hand, she's often the one who does deep dives into cases and finds details the other members of the Keating Five have overlooked. On the other hand, we know her father is up to some seriously sketchy stuff. Plus, she kept calling Frank after he skipped town.

Annalise would be sad if any of her students died, and if Laurel died because of something Frank did, Annalise's reaction would definitely be warranted. But we're still more likely to see Connor or Frank die first. — Meghan

Photo: Mitch Haaseth/ABC.

Laurel (Pros)

Laurel's been calling Frank over the summer after his disappearance, which could make her an easy target. If someone comes after Frank, there's a good chance they could accidentally harm Laurel instead.

Laurel(Cons)

Laurel's no-bullshit attitude makes her an integral member of the Keating Five. Plus, we're kind of 'shipping the budding rapport she and Wes had last season (even if it's on the rocks thanks to Frank's actions), and we need more Wes and Laurel scenes.

Plus, Annalise recently mentioned Laurel's father, and we know he's going to play into the third season somehow. Laurel needs to stay around to further that plot.

Michaela Pratt(Aja Naomi King)

Michaela's been through a lot — she's gone from being a brownnoser in the first season to being one of Annalise's most cutthroat students. It's definitely a possibility that she's on the stretcher — but if the house caught on fire, Michaela seems like she'd be the first to run away. Also, Annalise would certainly be sad if any of her students died, but she doesn't seem to have the most love for Michaela in particular. — Meghan

Photo: Mitch Haaseth/ABC.

Michaela (Pros)

Between calling off her engagement and her relationships with some seriously sketchy dudes, Michaela's had a lot of individual plots already. She's less distanced from the rest of the Keating Five than she used to be, but we'd still be more sad to lose Connor or Wes.

Michaela (Cons)

Michaela's had a lot of bad luck with guys, from her ex-fiancé to Levi and Caleb. Even though she's made it clear she only thinks of Asher as a "meat stick," it's still nice to see her in a sexual relationship she enjoys (with someone who isn't a murderer). Plus, we know Michaela can be tough in the courtroom, and she needs more time to shine before being killed off. (We also want to see the antics that ensue from Connor living with her, even if it's only temporary.)

Asher Millstone(Matt McGorry)

On the one hand, Annalise and Asher aren't particularly close. He asked her for a tuition loan after his father's death, which she refused. If Annalise is crying over Asher's death, it's more likely to be because she knows it would hurt Bonnie than because she's actually sad about his passing. — Meghan

Photo: Mitch Haaseth/ABC.

Asher (Pros)

Asher probably wouldn't be missed much by anyone other than Bonnie. He's made marginal progress toward being a better person (and not the privileged asshole in this video), but he's still got a long way to go. It would be unfortunate to lose him before that transformation continues, but that would also mean not losing a character we're actually attached to.

Asher (Cons)

The Asher-Michaela dynamic is fun, but Asher and Bonnie could still be endgame. Yes, Bonnie killed Rebecca (Katie Findlay), but she's been through a lot to help the Keating Five — especially Asher — and it's almost too depressing to imagine her losing him for good.

Frank Delfino (Charlie Weber)

Frank is a vicious hit man masquerading as a nice local boy from Philadelphia who looks good in suits. He used to be Annalise's most reliable henchman. Until we found out that Frank is the reason Annalise lost her baby, the person who murdered Lila, and the one who put Wes in danger when he took him to meet his father moments before he was killed.

Frank is on the run—and Annalise is very interested in finding him. Is it for revenge? Or is it to welcome him back into the fold? Maybe she's rationalized his murders in the same way she's rationalized her own misdeeds — as horrible, necessary things. After the terrible things he's done it's hard to imagine anyone mourning Frank's death. But never discount how much Laurel, Bonnie, and even Annalise care for him. —Ally

Photo: Mitch Haaseth/ABC.

Frank (Pros)

Frank is the "bad guy" this season and he's on the lam. So it's an easy leap of the mind to imagine that this season's end game could be a confrontation that concludes with Frank dying in a house fire. After his relationship with Laurel, fans have a soft spot for this maniac, so his death would certainly have meaning. And his long history with Annalise might break her — even if she appears to hate him right now.

Frank (Cons)

Isn't it almost too neat for Frank to be the one that dies in the fire? Like, of course, the "bad guy" ends up burning to death. A typical HTGAWM season is usually stacked with twists and turns you never saw coming. So it wouldn't be surprising if Frank's mission is bigger than we think — and possibly doesn't end in death. Plus, we're all hoping for a Frank and Laurel endgame, right? Or is it Laurel and Wes? Thoughts?

Ophelia Hartness (Cecily Tyson)

Annalise's mother didn't seem super warm, but she was willing to do anything for her daughter (including apparently sitting by while her attacker burned to death). Even troubled parent-child relationships often lead to tears when one dies. Maybe Annalise's mom was planning a surprise visit when she was in her daughter's home at the wrong time? — Molly

Another Student In Annalise's Legal Clinic

It's fair to say that Annalise would be pretty worked up if any of her students died — even those who aren't in the Keating Five. Annalise values her job at Middleton above almost anything else, as we've seen from her interactions with the university president this season. She plays tough, but if any of the students died because of something she did, Annalise wouldn’t be able to forgive herself.

It's not totally out of the question that another student would be at her house, either. We already know that the Keating Five aren't at the top of their class, so the clinic may need additional students working on cases at the home office. — Meghan
