The Australian-based brand's signature silhouettes have become so recognizable (and so widely copied) that we're always eager to see what it'll come up with next. And designer Kym Ellery's latest venture isn't a surprising one.Considering she helped bring mega-flares back to the mainstream, doing denim — Ellery-style of course — is a logical next step. And these aren't any old pair of jeans. She's translating her iconic, inventive twist on statement-making silhouettes with five debut styles: a classic high-waist, a boyfriend fit, and, you guessed it, multiple flared pieces. And while they're certainly an investment (the pants start at $690), we'll be the first to admit it's damn near impossible to put a price on the perfect pair of jeans.
For cult Ellery followers or newbies to the brand, these inventive baby blues will remind you that jeans don't need to be boring. To get the inside scoop on what makes these goods so unique, we chatted with the designer about why she's branching into denim, and just how easy it is to integrate these statement-makers into your wardrobe.
Why is Ellery making the foray into denim?
"I wanted to introduce a more casual component to our collection for the Ellery woman to enjoy, but I wanted to do so without compromising the brand's values: quality and innovation through design."
Tell us a little bit about the five styles, and why you decided on these for the debut.
"We wanted our first collection of denim to embrace not only the Ellery signature silhouettes, but also some classic styles. We want each shape to be essential in every woman's wardrobe. We chose a long and a cropped flare; a narrow flare; a slim, cut to the ankle style, and a boyfriend shape — all of which I personally want to incorporate into my day-to-day wardrobe. Someone who likes a more dramatic silhouette will be drawn to the flares, whereas those with a more tomboy-ish outlook will like the boyfriend-cut styles."
What's something that differentiates Ellery's denim from any other jeans?
"I'd have to say it's a mixture of both the silhouette and the finishings; both are equally unique."
How would yourecommendstyling these pieces?
"Try a cropped knit for a classic look, or a cotton, oversized shirt for more of a laid-back appeal. You could also pair the denim with a simple, tailored blazer; it's polished as well as timeless."
