What Happens When Normal Clothes Get Fashion-Fied

Rosie Assoulin's collections can often be summarized in one word: voluminous. More is more, bigger is better — whether it's referring to a ball gown with a train that feels like it falls for miles, or sleeves that pouf up, '80s-style, but in a way that's less prom-going.

But her most prized weapon of design might be that she can seemingly transform even the most normal of items — think classic striped button-downs, silky separates, and simple tank tops. Every piece of of Assoulin's most recent fall 2016 collection touched on this notion: She presented, in the simplest terms, normal clothes that were not-so-normal. The oh-so-popular bomber jacket was reimagined with aviator vibes in a cropped silhouette; the jumpsuit was given a more formal edge with an attached cape; the turtleneck featured a midsection keyhole. It was these unexpected, innovative additions to clothes we know, love, and wear every day (like the eight ahead) that reinforced what we already suspected: our classic, old-reliable garments don't need to be boring in order to be practical.

The Pantsuit
A three-piecer (we're talking blazer, trousers, and a vest) is made way less formal (though still totally party-ready) with an extra-wide leg, gold buttons, and a statement choker.

The Pajamas-For-Daytime Set
If you don't own a silky matching set that has billowing sleeves and is adorned with velvet, well, now is definitely the time to get shopping. Consider this dressed-up pajama dressing.

The Classic Button-Down
There are a million ways to wear a simple button-down shirt, but have you thought about transforming one into an off-the-shoulder top and layering it underneath a halter? This inventive styling (or, rather, #unstyling) gets an A+.

The Turtleneck
Introducing the new fashion term to know: the crater. A circular, tied keyhole in the middle of your clothing just made the average turtleneck feel a lot less like a layering piece and a lot more like a statement-maker.

The Going-Out Top
Here's an example of a going-out top (actually, going-out outfit) that doesn't suck. A looser, silk camisole gets an upgrade from its early-aughts popularity when paired with super-shiny separates.

The Leather Bottoms
We already know that leather leggings sell out like crazy, but looser-fitting, wider-leg leather pants? Well, we're ready to see this style catch on.

The Bomber Jacket
Thanks to Kendall, Gigi, and a slew of other It Girls, the bomber jacket has become the street style piece of the season. This cropped number mixes the staple with a more aviator-style piece, giving us a utilitarian coat we can actually wear day or night.

The Jumpsuit
Since cape dresses are already a celebrity favorite, it was only a matter of time before the caped jumpsuit made an appearance. With wide legs, a looser-fitting silhouette, and a train for days, our plain old throw-on-and-go staple suddenly feels way more formal.
